What to do if you have hemoptysis

A variety of diseases can cause coughing up blood, such as respiratory system diseases, circulatory system diseases, trauma, and systemic bleeding tendency diseases, but the more common ones are those caused by respiratory system diseases. A small amount of coughing up blood should be seen in time for relevant examination and treatment at the hospital. In the case of a large amount of hemoptysis, it is necessary to rescue the patient in time, otherwise the patient’s life will be threatened. This is because there is a risk of hemorrhagic shock with symptoms of large coughing up blood, and the indirect danger is secondary pulmonary infection or obstruction of the bronchi by blood vessels causing atelectasis. The first thing to do in case of hemoptysis is to stay calm, do not panic, make the patient lie down with the head to one side and gently cough up the blood. If the bleeding is unexplained, the head should be tilted to the side, while closely observing the patient’s breathing, pulse and blood pressure. At this time, we must pay attention not to let the patient exercise again, and to pay attention not to force defecation if there is a stool situation, otherwise it will aggravate the possibility of coughing up blood. The most important thing is to keep the respiratory tract open. If the patient feels short of breath, help the patient to remove the secretions from the mouth and nose to keep the respiratory tract open, and give oxygen if possible. After the initial treatment, coughing blood has eased, the patient’s blood pressure, pulse, breathing stable, we should go to the hospital as soon as possible for further treatment, because bleeding a large amount may lead to life-threatening.
