Rib fractures are very common clinically and are now mostly fixed externally with multi-headed chest straps or elastic chest straps and left to heal on their own. Although external fixation has some efficacy in stabilizing the fracture and temporarily relieving pain, long-term pain relief is not ideal, especially when it causes thoracic deformity. In order to achieve the elimination of chest wall floating and continuous shackle chest, minimize the risk and relieve the patient’s pain, it has become the trend to use internal fixation devices for surgical internal fixation. The purpose of internal fixation of rib fractures is mainly to stabilize the chest wall, restore the original shape of the thorax as much as possible, eliminate paradoxical breathing, eliminate abnormal activity stimulation caused by the fracture by stabilizing the fracture end, effectively relieve pain, and effectively prevent pulmonary atelectasis and lung infection. There are various materials for internal fixation of rib fracture, such as steel wire, Kirschner pin, absorbable bone nail, thin plate, ring hugger, etc. Among them, the nickel-titanium alloy ring hugger is simple to operate and does not require excessive peeling of the periosteum, which greatly reduces the surgical trauma and shortens the operation time and reduces the risk. According to the size of rib diameter and the type of fracture, a suitable internal fixator is selected to stabilize the fracture end, effectively restoring the integrity of the thorax, eliminating paradoxical breathing, promoting good expansion of lung tissue, reducing pulmonary complications, and improving the appearance of the thorax, which plays a cosmetic and reconstructive role. It is an ideal treatment for patients with multiple rib fractures, especially those with chest wall floating, shackle chest, hemopneumothorax and other complications. We have performed this procedure on several patients and experienced satisfactory results. It should be noted, however, that surgery is not necessary in patients with simple rib fractures, and is not indicated in patients who have been injured for too long and whose fractures tend to heal on their own.
