How to treat uremic acidosis

Acidosis in uremic patients can be treated with sodium bicarbonate and hemodialysis. Due to the decrease of glomerular filtration rate, patients with uremia have impaired excretion of acid and are prone to metabolic acidosis, which can cause hyperkalemia leading to malignant cardiac arrhythmia and even sudden death. If metabolic acidosis occurs, conservative treatment is usually sodium bicarbonate. When the acidosis is mild and the carbon dioxide binding capacity is above 13 mmol/L, sodium bicarbonate can be given orally, two tablets at a time, three times a day. If the acidosis is more pronounced and the carbon dioxide binding capacity is below 13 mmol/L, sodium bicarbonate injection needs to be given intravenously. Of course, if combined with hyperkalemia, blood potassium is more than 6.5mmol/L, it is recommended to give hemodialysis treatment immediately, hemodialysis is the best way to correct acidosis.
