Corneal leukoplakia has the potential to cause blindness.
Corneal leukoplakia is usually caused by corneal infections, corneal trauma and other causes that result in the formation of scarring in the stromal tissue of the cornea. The collagen fibers of the scar tissue in the cornea are irregularly arranged and therefore become opaque, which can block the refraction of light into the eye, thus seriously affecting vision, and in the case of dense corneal leukoplakia, it is possible for the patient to lose his/her sight.
Patients suffering from corneal leukoplakia can promote vision recovery through surgical treatment, for example, corneal transplantation can be done, which means replacing the patient’s diseased corneal tissue with transparent donor corneal tissue.
Patients with corneal leukoplakia should go to the ophthalmology department of the hospital for timely examination, and the doctor will evaluate the condition and then formulate an individualized treatment plan for the patient.
