Brain atrophy is chronic and incurable, and needs to be treated according to the cause of the disease in order to alleviate the symptoms, and there is no so-called “special-effect medicine for brain atrophy” at present. Commonly used therapeutic drugs include drugs to improve cognition, antidepressants and psychotropic drugs, as well as treatment of the original disease.
1. Drugs to improve cognition: such as donepezil, olaxetan and so on. Among them, olaxetan is used for mild to moderate vascular dementia, traumatic brain injury and other causes of memory and intellectual disabilities; donepezil is a cholinesterase inhibitor, which is effective in improving symptoms of cerebral atrophy dementia, memory and behavioral disorders.
2. Antidepressants and antipsychotics: patients with brain atrophy may have personality changes, such as depression, etc. Sertraline, fluoxetine, olanzapine and other antidepressants and antipsychotics can be used as appropriate.
3. Treatment of primary disease: If cerebral atrophy is caused by cerebral infarction, aspirin can be given for anti-platelet aggregation, atorvastatin for plaque stabilization, and butylphthalide for improving circulation.
Patients with cerebral atrophy should consult the doctor in time, and carry out active and regular treatment for the primary disease, and should not blindly use medication on their own, so as to avoid ineffective treatment and delay the disease.
