How to rule out infection with a new type of pneumonia when you have a fever

If the patient has fever and wants to rule out whether he/she is suffering from novel coronavirus pneumonia, he/she needs to go to the hospital to check the chest images, such as X-ray and CT, and also to check the respiratory viral nucleic acid. Fever is a common feature of many infectious diseases, except for the current novel coronavirus pneumonia, other pathogenic microorganisms invade the human body, including non-infectious factors can cause fever, so it can not be assumed that fever is infected with novel coronavirus pneumonia. To confirm the diagnosis of novel coronavirus pneumonia, the patient should first have clinical features, such as cough, sputum, fever, dyspnea, chest pain, coughing up blood, etc.; the patient’s chest images, such as chest X-ray or CT, have clear imaging features of viral infection; and the patient has respiratory secretions for nucleic acid testing. Nucleic acid tests are now available to confirm the presence of novel coronaviruses in respiratory secretions. It is only through these three points that a patient can be diagnosed as a patient with a novel coronavirus pneumonia infection, so the diagnosis should not be based solely on fever, which may lead to misdiagnosis.
