A fracture of the arm, especially of the forearm, will definitely cause local swelling. In case of local swelling, the limb should be braked and the affected limb should be elevated appropriately to help reduce the swelling. In addition, early medication such as mannitol should be administered to relieve the local swelling and muscle strength exercises can be performed to reduce the local swelling. If the swelling is very pronounced, the forearm should be incised and the fascia decompressed to prevent distal ischemia and muscle necrosis in cases of osteo-fascial compartment syndrome. The distal blood flow should be closely monitored. If the distal blood flow is poor, there may be vascular or nerve damage and further surgical exploration may be required.
