ERCP is an effective, albeit invasive, treatment for your disease, so please try to relax. A variety of medications will be administered before the procedure to reduce your pain and discomfort during the procedure. The oral local anesthetic should be swallowed slowly, not in one gulp. We will not perform the treatment until the medication has taken effect. Maintaining your position at all times during the treatment will facilitate the smooth completion of the operation. When the endoscope enters the gastrointestinal tract, it is the most uncomfortable part of the procedure and lasts only a few minutes if you are cooperative. However, if you dodge or squirm because of the discomfort, you will only suffer longer pain and discomfort, which not only makes the operation more difficult and time consuming, but can even be dangerous. If you have saliva or nausea or vomiting during the treatment, please do not hold it in or swallow it, but let it flow naturally to avoid choking and coughing. If you can keep your breathing steady and even, your treatment will be completed faster and smoother. If there are any special circumstances during the treatment, you can signal us with your hand.
