Acupuncture can treat urinary retention, but it is more suitable for urinary retention caused by kidney qi deficiency, or spleen qi deficiency. Chinese medicine believes that urinary retention belongs to retention of urine (urine dripping or not being able to urinate), and can be clinically treated with acupuncture by selecting Sanyinjiao, Yinlingquan, Guiyang, Bladder Yu and Zhongji. Retention of urine can be categorized into five types depending on the etiology: bladder dampness and heat, liver qi stagnation, blood stasis and obstruction, spleen qi weakness, and kidney qi deficiency, and moxibustion is suitable for the deficiency syndrome of retention of urine. For weak spleen qi, moxibustion can be added to foot-sanli and spleen yu, and for kidney qi deficiency, moxibustion can be added to kidney yu and vital gate. If the retention of urine is caused by dampness-heat or other causes, it is recommended to take acupuncture treatment under the guidance of a doctor, so as not to aggravate constipation, thirst and other signs of heat with moxibustion. It is recommended that moxibustion be done correctly under the guidance of a doctor.
