Do vegetative people have consciousness?

A vegetative person is unconscious and retains only conditioned reflexes to the outside world such as coughing. Patients with more severe brain injury may remain in a coma and in a vegetative state, despite timely treatment, and will be declared vegetative. A vegetative state is a special human state similar to a vegetative state of existence, with complete loss of cognitive ability and no active activity, and is a kind of irreversible coma. However, the brainstem of a vegetative person is still functional, and the body can still digest and absorb, and maintain the body’s metabolism, including breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure. In addition, a vegetative person can also produce some instinctive reflexes to external stimuli, such as coughing, sneezing, yawning and so on. However, the organism no longer has consciousness, perception, thinking and other higher neural activities that are unique to humans. Although vegetative people are unconscious and have cognitive dysfunction, they often respond to auditory stimuli. Therefore, it is very helpful for family members to accompany and chat with the patient as often as they do with normal people.
