How do I protect my knees in the fall?

Arthritis is currently the disease with the highest disability rate in the world. According to statistics, the prevalence rate in China is 50% among people over 60 years old and 80% among people over 75 years old. Since there is no cure for the disease, it should be taken seriously by the population. Cold dew is the 17th of the twenty-four solar terms in the lunar calendar, and is the fifth solar term of autumn, indicating the official start of the season. Cold dew means that the temperature is lower than that of white dew, the dew on the ground is colder and is about to condense into frost, and the temperature gradually drops. White dew, cold dew and frost all indicate the condensation of water vapor, and cold dew is the transition from cool to cold climate. Autumn is also the time when arthritis begins. If you pay attention to your joints at this time, you will benefit throughout the winter, and if you pay attention to protecting your joints when you are young, you will benefit for the rest of your life. Osteoarthritis is a joint disease caused by the interaction of multiple factors that lead to fibrosis, cracking, ulceration, and loss of joint cartilage. The cause of the disease is unclear, and its occurrence may be related to age, obesity, inflammation, trauma, and genetic factors. The disease starts gradually and the most common symptoms are anterior knee pain and intermittent pain on the deep surface of the patella. Patellofemoral pain can be triggered by various actions that increase the load on the patellofemoral joint or produce strong pressure, but is most common after stair climbing or bending the knee in a sedentary manner. The pain and tenderness may increase when going downstairs. Physical examination often reveals a positive patellar grinding test and pressure pain at the patellar rim; patellofemoral joint grinding sounds and pain can be produced during knee movement. As a result of the inability to exert force during activity, quadriceps atrophy may occur, and over time, inability to fully straighten or impaired movement may eventually lead to disability. People often think of arthritis as a disease of the elderly, but in fact, people of all ages, even children, can suffer from this disease. Information shows that the overall incidence of arthritis in China is about 13%, and since there is no cure for the disease, it should be taken seriously by all people, and arthritis should be prevented, diagnosed and treated early to prevent disability. Prevention of patellofemoral arthritis should begin in adolescence. In study, work and life, we should pay attention to maintaining a good posture of the limbs, wear less high-heeled shoes, avoid excessive strain on the lower limbs, avoid prolonged squatting, walking or cycling; we should also pay attention to the intake of sufficient vitamin D and calcium, and pay attention to keeping warm in winter so as not to induce aggravation of symptoms. Proper physical activity can enhance the strength and endurance of the muscles around the joints, which is beneficial to the stability of the joints, maintain the range of motion of the joints, and enhance the coordination of the body and improve the ability to live a normal life. Inappropriate exercise or excessive exercise can aggravate the damage to joint cartilage triggering or aggravating the symptoms and contributing to the progression of the disease. Therefore, a reasonable training plan should be made according to the principle of individualization and gradual progress. If joint pain and discomfort occur after exercise, the intensity should be reduced and the duration shortened. For weight-bearing joints such as hip and knee, weight-bearing activities such as climbing, long-distance walking, pedaling and jumping should be avoided, and walking, jogging, cycling and swimming can be chosen as appropriate, or exercises such as joint flexion and extension or muscle under non-load. Heat therapy, hydrotherapy, infrared ultra-short wave ion introduction, electrical stimulation and physical therapy can enhance local blood circulation in joints, relieve muscle tension, reduce pain and other symptoms, and improve joint function, and Chinese acupuncture and massage and traditional therapy also have certain effects, but the above therapies should be applied after diagnosis by a doctor at a hospital. Those with more severe symptoms should comply with the doctor’s recommendation for treatment through minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. In short, timely intervention and early prevention and treatment should be carried out.
