When a nail is ingested into the stomach, an orthopantomogram of the abdomen is required to determine the location of the nail and whether it can be removed via gastroscopy. It is important to know the length and size of the nail, and whether the tip is a pointed or rounded head, as a nail entering the digestive tract may cause perforation of the digestive tract. If the nail can be removed gastroscopically, minimally invasive treatment can be performed. If it cannot be removed endoscopically and the nail is large and cannot be expelled naturally through the digestive tract, surgical procedures will be required to remove the nail.
