Conception is successful within 1-2 days after intercourse. If intercourse occurs during ovulation, the sperm will pass through the uterine cavity into the jugular abdomen of the fallopian tube in about 1-2 hours after discharge, and faster moving sperm can enter the uterine cavity within a few minutes. If the sperm encounters the egg it will begin to fertilize within 12 hours, and through a series of complex physicochemical reactions, fertilization is completed within 24 hours to form a fertilized egg. The fertilized egg enters the uterine cavity after about 3-4 days and is buried in the endometrium to continue its development. To improve the chances of conception, it is recommended that women do not get up and move around immediately after intercourse, but preferably rest for about two hours to allow more sperm sufficient time to enter the uterine cavity. Women with a posterior uterus can raise their hips appropriately to allow the cervix to be fully immersed in semen, so that more sperm have the opportunity to enter the uterine cavity to improve the chances of conception.
