Breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery

With the advancement of comprehensive treatment for breast cancer, greatly improved survival rate after surgery, and patients’ strong pursuit of physical beauty and quality of life, breast reconstruction surgery after surgery for breast cancer has been increasingly popularized nowadays. Breast cancer patients not only have to bear the threat of life-threatening cancer, but also have to bear the blow of losing one breast due to breast cancer treatment, which causes great damage to both the body and psychology of the patients. Breast reconstruction can make the patient’s body intact, restore the sense of femininity, restore self-confidence, easy to dress, easy to physical activities, and does not leave a large scar on the chest. The fact that breast reconstruction improves physical appearance is most undeniable, and it becomes a part of breast cancer treatment, not simply a matter of cosmetic surgery. Principles of breast reconstruction: ①Techniques used for reconstruction do not interfere with the implementation, efficacy and prognosis of breast cancer treatment, and do not affect the immediate detection of tumor recurrence and re-treatment; ②The reconstructed breast should achieve the ideal cosmetic and functional effects, and improve the patient’s quality of life. Timing of breast reconstruction: Stage I reconstructive surgery refers to mastectomy with simultaneous breast reconstruction and repair, also known as immediate reconstructive surgery, where excision and reconstruction are completed at one time. Stage II reconstruction refers to reconstruction after recovery from radical surgery, also known as delayed reconstruction, which is usually performed 6 to 12 months after incision healing. Reconstructive procedures include breast prosthesis implantation; autologous tissue breast reconstruction: the more widely used ones are latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap and transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap; nipple areola reconstruction; and adjustments to the healthy side of the breast. With the continuous introduction of new viewpoints and surgical methods for breast cancer, breast reconstruction and plastic surgery have become an important part of breast oncology surgery, and the cause of breast aesthetics for breast cancer patients has a long way to go.
