Slow wave in EEG is not a developmental delay, which is categorized into physiological and pathological.
Physiological slow wave will appear in the third stage of sleep, which is a normal physiological phenomenon; children’s EEG is dominated by slow wave, which gradually decreases with the increase of age, while alpha wave gradually increases, and it is close to the adult EEG at the age of 14 to 18.
Most of the slow waves occurring in adult waking state are pathologic, usually appearing in some cerebral nerve ischemia and hypoxia or pathological diseases such as diffuse encephalopathy, hypoxic encephalopathy and so on.
Slow waves on EEG alone cannot fully confirm the diagnosis of a disease, and other tests are needed to make the diagnosis. When EEG slow waves occur, it is recommended to go to a regular specialized hospital and follow the doctor’s advice, do not delay and treat it arbitrarily.
