Causes and risks of high total bilirubin in children

The causes and dangers of high total bilirubin in children, increased total bilirubin in children is also caused by increased combined or unconjugated bilirubin, usually, the disease of increased bilirubin in children is mainly related to some congenital diseases, we divide it into several categories. For example, obstructive jaundice, in which direct bilirubin is the predominant factor in total bilirubin, may be associated with congenital biliary anomalies, and the child is likely to develop jaundice gradually after birth. There is also indirect bilirubin, which is mainly hemolytic jaundice, commonly caused by mother-child blood type incompatibility or some congenital diseases that lead to high total bilirubin in children. Hepatocellular jaundice, in which both direct and indirect bilirubin in total bilirubin are increased, occurs when the function of liver cells is impaired due to viral or bacterial infections, most commonly due to hepatitis virus infection. In children, increased bilirubin may manifest as yellowing of the skin and sclera and a deepening of the color of the urine. For children, jaundice is a major risk because the increased bilirubin can lead to abnormal liver function, weakened liver metabolism and the inability to metabolize bilirubin, which can lead to infections in the central nervous system and various organs of the body and eventually lead to liver failure. Jaundice in children also excludes many leukemia, severe anemia and other such problems, so once jaundice appears, it is recommended to immediately go to the hospital to avoid delaying the condition.
