Patients with hypertension are advised to quit smoking and alcohol because these two substances have a relatively large impact on hypertensive patients. Firstly, alcohol consumption can make blood pressure fluctuate more in hypertensive patients, promote the formation of atherosclerosis, and may make complications of hypertension occur, so alcohol consumption is not recommended. Secondly, smoking may excite the sympathetic nerve endings of patients and raise blood pressure, and impair nitric oxide-mediated vasodilation, which can also raise blood pressure. Smoking can cause blood pressure to rise and damage the arteries of patients, causing atherosclerosis to form and possibly causing complications of hypertension, so smoking is not recommended. Patients with hypertension are advised to stop smoking and drinking and to monitor their blood pressure so that it does not fluctuate too much.
