What does progesterone test for?

Progesterone can be used to monitor ovulation, luteal function and placental function, as well as to assist in the diagnosis of gynecological and pregnancy-related diseases.
1. Monitoring ovulation: Progesterone rises during ovulation, and the gradual rise in progesterone indicates that ovulation may be occurring.
2. Monitoring luteal function: after ovulation, progesterone is mainly secreted by the corpus luteum, so if progesterone decreases in the luteal phase after ovulation, it suggests that there may be luteal insufficiency.
3. Monitor the function of the placenta: a decrease in progesterone during pregnancy suggests that there may be fetal growth retardation.
4. Assist in the diagnosis of gynecological diseases: elevated progesterone is commonly seen in hyperemesis gravidarum and ovarian tumors, while low progesterone can be seen in polycystic ovary syndrome, primary or secondary amenorrhea, anovulatory uterine hemorrhage, and so on.
5. To assist in the diagnosis of pregnancy-related diseases: increased progesterone can be seen in hypertensive syndrome of pregnancy, decreased progesterone can be seen in stillbirth and so on.
The main role of blood progesterone is to maintain a normal menstrual cycle and normal pregnancy, when the value of progesterone is abnormal, suggesting the existence of gynecological or pregnancy-related anomalies, it is recommended to consult a specialist in time.
