What’s going on with reflux after eating?

Upward food regurgitation after eating may be caused by abnormal function of esophageal structure, abnormal function of gastrointestinal structure, or long-term increased intra-abdominal pressure and change of body position.
1. Abnormal function of the esophagus: Reduced clearance effect can cause upward food regurgitation after eating, which is mostly seen in diseases with abnormal peristalsis of the esophagus and reduced salivary secretion, such as esophageal hiatal hernia, part of the stomach passes through the diaphragmatic esophageal hiatus and enters into the thoracic cavity, which not only alters the structure of the esophagus, but also reduces the esophagus’s clearing effect of regurgitated material, thus leading to the occurrence of esophageal reflux disease.
2. Abnormal gastrointestinal structure: long-term pyloric stenosis leads to increased intragastric pressure, which prevents food from emptying downward after entering the stomach and retains it in the stomach, which can only be emptied upward after fermentation, leading to the phenomenon of reflux.
3. Long-term increase in intra-abdominal pressure: for example, when there is a large amount of ascites for a long period of time, or in the late stage of pregnancy, the stomach and intestines will be squeezed upward, which will easily cause regurgitation after satiety.
4. Changes in body position: Eating too much or lying down after a full meal will also easily cause food reflux upwards. Therefore, you should eat less and more meals to avoid overfeeding.
Therefore, after the occurrence of reflux after eating, please go to the hospital for medical checkups according to your own physical condition as appropriate.
