Male pattern baldness, also known as seborrheic alopecia and androgenetic alopecia, accounts for 95 percent of all hair loss types. In China, the incidence of male pattern baldness is nearly 20%, which means that one in five men suffers from male pattern baldness, and the incidence increases with age. In recent years, the disease has been developing at a younger age, with men between the ages of 20 and 40 being the main force behind male pattern baldness, with the fastest development around the age of 30. As the old saying goes, “toothache is not a disease, but a pain that kills”, medical evidence proves that toothache is a disease. Similarly, hair loss is still not considered a disease by most people. In order to gain insight into the public’s awareness of hair loss, the China Health Promotion and Education Association conducted the “China Male Hair Loss Survey” in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, interviewing 600 men and 600 women suffering from hair loss. According to the survey results, more than 70% of male respondents admitted that hair loss affects their life and work, and 60% of male respondents thought that hair loss affects their self-confidence, while the most disturbing aspect of hair loss in their daily life is marriage. Eighty percent of women said outright that they would reject the pursuit of a man with hair loss. The tremendous psychological and mental pressure that alopecia areata sufferers are under is evident. In contrast to the severe disease situation and the distress caused by hair loss to patients, there is a lack of public awareness of the disease. Although the hair loss group is huge, the survey shows that only 25% of male pattern baldness patients are aware that male pattern baldness is a disease, and very few know that “hair loss is a gradual process”. The cause of male pattern baldness is now relatively clear. The scalp of male pattern baldness patients contains a large amount of dihydrotestosterone (an androgen), which acts on the scalp hair follicles and causes them to atrophy and degenerate. Under the action of dihydrotestosterone, the patient’s hair is like a big tree turned into a small sapling, the hair follicles grow out are Cui (cui) hair, which is often said to be sweat hair, and it is easy to fall off, slowly the hair is getting less and less, and hair loss is formed. Most of the male pattern baldness hair loss first from the forehead on both sides of the sideburns, the hairline began to move back, gradually to the top of the head development. Many patients often do not pay enough attention to the early onset of hair loss, not knowing that the receding hairline on the forehead is its early manifestation, and failing to take effective treatment in time, they miss the best time for treatment, which directly leads to the aggravation of hair loss. Male pattern baldness is a common and curable disease. Since it is a progressive aggravation process, the earlier the treatment, the better the outcome. Many patients mistakenly believe that the problem can be solved simply by rest or dietary adjustments, or even by changing shampoos. Unbeknownst to them, those who do not take formal treatment for hair loss will not stop the whole process and the hair loss will get heavier. Male pattern baldness was untreatable 10 years ago, but now it is possible. This is thanks to the progress of science and medicine. The key to hair loss is to treat it regularly, cosmetics (including special cosmetics) cannot solve the hair loss problem. In the face of hair loss, patients should not refrain from seeking medical advice or seek medical help in an emergency, but should consult a dermatologist as early as possible to obtain professional and correct solutions for hair loss to avoid further aggravation of the condition and irreversible changes. At present, the dermatology departments of some large tertiary hospitals in China have opened special clinics for male pattern baldness (AGA special clinics), providing a quality treatment platform for patients with male pattern baldness.
