On February 20, a patient with advanced gastric cancer was discharged from Nanjing Military General Hospital one week after surgery, which is another successful case of advanced gastric cancer treatment implemented by the National Institute of General Surgery. The post-operative examination proved that the patient’s vital signs not only returned to normal, but also the pathological specimen showed the complete disappearance of large cancer cells, and no sign of cancer metastasis was found. Combined with chemotherapy, the tumor was “slimmed down”. Professor Li Guo, deputy chief physician of the National Institute of General Surgery in charge of the treatment, excitedly told reporters that this is the seventh case of advanced gastric cancer among more than 100 gastrointestinal cancer surgeries they have successfully performed in recent years, and it has been proved that the treatment plan of “neoadjuvant chemotherapy” has an efficiency of 85% in treating advanced gastric cancer. The patient, Zhu, 49, from Taixing, Jiangsu Province, both husband and wife are laid-off workers, was found to have advanced gastric cancer in the local hospital after sudden severe pain in the stomach at the end of last year, and the couple almost despaired. On December 8, he was referred and admitted to the general surgery department of Nanjing Military General Hospital. After examination, the patient’s malignant lymphoma had spread extensively in many parts of the stomach and was wrapped with the liver and intestine, making the surgery extremely difficult. In order to avoid the metastasis of cancer cells, Prof. Li Guo and his assistant Dr. Fan Chaogang, deputy chief physician, used the “neoadjuvant chemotherapy” therapy to develop a personalized treatment plan for the patient, and combined chemotherapy and intervention for more than two months to “thin” the tumor and gradually destroy the cancer cells. The cancer cells were gradually destroyed. The cancer cells no longer metastasized. After 4 interventions and 2 chemotherapy sessions, the cancer cells were basically controlled and after detailed examination, the patient’s indexes met the requirements for surgery, and on February 12, Prof. Li successfully operated on him and the patient’s large tumor was removed. After the post-operative review, Prof. Li confirmed that the treatment was successful and no metastasis of cancer cells was found in the patient’s body and he could be discharged after a week of rest. Cancer is not always a “death sentence”. According to Prof. Li, gastrointestinal cancer is a very dangerous disease, which is a worldwide medical problem that has not been solved so far. Professor Li Guo, under the leadership of Academician Li Jieshou, and his colleagues have come out with a new path in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. At present, Nanjing Military General Hospital has achieved significant research results in treating patients with similar advanced gastric cancer. Patients are in good condition after surgery, with few recurrences and the longest survival up to 3 years, which has been in the forefront of the field in China and even in the world. As to how to detect gastric cancer at an early stage, Prof. Li believes that not all cancers are a “death sentence” and suggests that we should raise awareness of disease prevention and control and have an annual health checkup in order to receive timely and effective treatment.
