Is recurrent metastatic ovarian cancer the same as a death sentence?

Ovarian cancer recurrence and metastasis is not equal to death sentence, and patients can prolong the survival period after taking standardized treatment in time. Usually, ovarian cancer is easy to metastasize and recur, and generally can be metastasized through direct spread and abdominal implantation, with poor prognosis. However, patients can still prolong the survival time with regular review, timely medical treatment and standardized treatment, so it does not mean that the recurrence of ovarian cancer and metastasis will be directly life-threatening. There are more factors leading to the recurrence of ovarian cancer. Generally speaking, the 5-year survival rate of early-stage ovarian cancer patients can be as high as more than 80%, which is significantly higher than that of middle and late-stage patients, and middle and late-stage patients may have recurrence in 1~2 years. Meanwhile, plasma and clear cell carcinomas are more likely to recur compared with mucinous carcinomas. In addition, older age, presence of comorbidities, poor immunity, residual lesions after surgery may also lead to recurrence. Patients are advised to pay close attention to their own status after treatment and have long-term follow-up so as to seek timely medical treatment.
