Delayed evacuation of meconium refers to the failure of newborns to pass meconium after 24 hours of birth, which may be due to congenital megacolon, sticky meconium, incomplete intestinal obstruction and other reasons.
1. Congenital megacolon: Most of the newborns with congenital megacolon are unable to pass stools within 24 hours of birth, and there are different degrees of intestinal obstruction.
2. Sticky meconium: The meconium includes the epithelial cells of the intestinal wall, the amniotic fluid swallowed by the fetus and other substances mixed together, which may lead to sticky feces, and cannot be eliminated from the intestine in time, which is manifested in the phenomenon of delayed expulsion of the meconium.
3. Incomplete intestinal obstruction: For newborns with incomplete intestinal obstruction, the feces may not be excreted by themselves or only a small amount of feces is excreted due to the intestinal obstruction, and delayed fecal discharge occurs, which may be accompanied by abdominal distension, vomiting and other symptoms.
It is recommended to go to the hospital for examination to identify the cause of the delayed evacuation of meconium and to determine whether there is an organic pathology, which should be treated accordingly.
