Rib tumors belong to a kind of chest wall tumors, which can be divided into two categories: primary and metastatic. Primary rib tumors are benign and malignant. They mostly occur in the anterior chest wall and lateral wall. Benign tumors commonly include chondrosarcoma, osteofibroma, osteoma, etc. Malignant tumors are mostly chondrosarcoma, including nerve tumors originated from deep soft tissues, lipoma and various types of sarcoma. Metastatic chest wall tumors are most common to metastasize to ribs, which are metastasized from malignant tumors in other parts of the body. It often leads to pathologic fracture of the ribs and causes pain. Generally speaking, benign bone or cartilage tumors can be palpated as masses in the chest wall, which are hard like bone, with clear margins and slow enlargement, while malignant tumors are soft in texture, with dilated blood vessels on the surface, with unclear margins, fast growth and pain. However, the diagnosis also needs to be combined with CT scan and tumor pathology biopsy if necessary. The treatment of rib tumor needs to be combined with medical history, physical signs and relevant auxiliary examinations to determine benign or malignant, primary or metastatic, and the treatment options are different in different cases. If rib tumor is diagnosed, it should be standardized treatment under the guidance of doctor.
