Are there any side effects of pelvic floor muscle therapy

There are non-surgical and surgical treatments for pelvic floor muscles. Non-surgical treatments present fewer side effects, mainly vaginal infections, pain or discomfort during the use of vaginal devices, and some patients may experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding. Surgical treatment is also the main form of treatment, after which vaginal stenosis and poor healing of the incision may occur. 1. Non-surgical treatments: commonly used are electrical stimulation plus biofeedback therapy, pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation training and so on. (1) Electrical stimulation plus biofeedback therapy: training the pelvic floor muscle function through electric current stimulation, improving muscle contraction and strengthening the pelvic floor muscle groups to enhance defecation function. The operation requires placing the probe inside the vagina, which may cause vaginal pain or discomfort, or even a small amount of vaginal bleeding. If sterilization measures are not in place, it may lead to vaginal infection. (2) Pelvic floor and rehabilitation training: such as Kegel exercises and contraction exercises can maintain the strength and elasticity of the pelvic floor muscles, enhance the blood circulation in the pelvic floor area, strengthen the function of defecation, and help sexual life. Pelvic floor and rehabilitation training has no side effects, but it is not suitable when there is vaginal bleeding, pregnancy, vaginitis and urinary tract infection. 2. Surgical therapy: If the pelvic floor muscle is seriously damaged, it can be treated by pelvic floor muscle repair surgery. However, after the surgery, there will be localized incision pain and small abdominal pain, and some patients may have vaginal stenosis and poor healing of the incision after the surgery. Therefore, pelvic floor muscle treatment should consult a specialized doctor and follow the doctor’s instructions to regulate the treatment according to your own situation in order to reduce the incidence of side effects.
