The average number of years it takes for a bowel polyp to become cancerous is uncertain and varies from person to person. The reason is that whether or not a polyp will become cancerous and how long it will take for cancer to develop are related to the size and nature of the polyp. If the polyp is small, such as less than 0.5cm, it may not become cancerous and can be observed and followed up; if it is more than 0.5cm, the chance of cancer will be higher, some people may become cancerous in 1~2 years, while some may become cancerous after 5 years, and the time for cancer to develop is different for each person. Juvenile polyps and inflammatory polyps are less likely to become cancerous; misshapen polyps are also less likely to become cancerous; and adenomatous polyps are generally considered to be tumor polyps pathologically, and have a high chance of becoming cancerous. Therefore, after discovering intestinal polyps, patients should consult their doctors and intervene for treatment as early as possible. Surgical removal should be performed if necessary to avoid the risk of cancer over time.
