Can you have a root canal while breastfeeding?

Root canal treatment is usually possible during breastfeeding. For patients who require anesthetic injections, it is recommended to avoid breastfeeding after the injection on the same day. Root canal treatment consists of three major steps: root canal preparation, root canal disinfection and root canal filling. It is mainly used to treat pulpitis and periapical periodontitis, to control inflammation and prevent further progression of the disease. For patients with pulpitis, as the pulp is not completely necrotic, anesthetic injection may be needed to relieve pain during root canal preparation. These patients are advised to avoid breastfeeding on the same day, and to breastfeed after 12 hours when most of the anesthetic has been metabolized. Root canal disinfection and root canal filling generally have little effect on breastfeeding. Chronic apical periapical inflammation generally do not need to inject anesthetic. It is recommended to go to the dental department of a regular hospital, inform the physician before the operation, and listen to the doctor’s instructions for the arrangement.
