Eye Inflammation Terminology

There are two main categories of ocular inflammation, one is infectious inflammation and the other is immunologic inflammation. Infectious inflammation is further divided by location, such as inflammation occurring in the cornea, as corneal inflammation; if inflammation occurs in the middle of the eye, there may be iridocyclitis, or chorioretinitis and peripheral inflammation, but the inflammation is all immune related; if intraocular foreign bodies cause endophthalmitis, this is mostly infectious inflammation; there may also be retinal retinitis or optic neuritis, which are often immune related. Inflammation of the eye should be classified by location and type of infection in order to treat it accordingly.
