Is epilepsy hereditary?

Epilepsy is not a stand-alone disease but a group of disorders or syndromes. Epilepsy can be categorized into idiopathic epilepsy, secondary epilepsy and cryptogenic epilepsy according to its cause, of which the cause of idiopathic epilepsy is still unclear and may be related to heredity.
1. Idiopathic epilepsy: the cause of the disease is not clear, may be related to heredity, and often starts at a particular age.
2. Secondary epilepsy: Secondary epilepsy is caused by various kinds of structural damage or functional abnormalities of the central nervous system. Common causes include head trauma, intracranial tumors, cortical developmental disorders, parasitic infections and so on, which are usually not hereditary.
3. Cryptogenic epilepsy: the cause is not yet clear.
