How to take care of prostate cancer after surgery?

Self-care is important for postoperative recovery, and it is also important to follow medical advice after treatment. Some basic principles of care are listed below:

Incision care

After surgery, a small piece of tape (called a no-sew tape) is placed over the incision site and can be removed 10 to 14 days after surgery. The incision should be kept clean and dry for one week after surgery, with a sponge scrubbing bath instead of a shower. Do not swim without your doctor’s permission.

Pain relief

Postoperatively, pain medication is usually prescribed to relieve pain. Do not take aspirin or medicines containing aspirin for the first 3 days after surgery.

Skin care

After the procedure, the surgical site may be bruised and purple, but this usually fades within a few days. Patients may experience numbness, tingling, or discomfort after surgery, which is normal.

Mild pain medications can be taken to relieve the pain. A week after surgery, you can take a hot shower to make yourself feel comfortable.

Exercise

Please return to your normal activities gradually, as recommended by your doctor.

Driving

Most men can return to driving 10 to 14 days after surgery, depending on the doctor’s recommendations.

Sexuality

See your doctor for advice on when you can resume sexual activity.

Emergencies

Patients with prostate cancer should seek immediate medical attention after discharge from the hospital and return home if they experience any of the following:

  • A fever higher than 38°C;
  • Increased pain that is not relieved by pain medication;
  • Difficulty urinating, such as incomplete urination, painful urination, blood in the urine, or abnormal frequency of urination.
