Benefits and Drawbacks of Picc Tubes for Cancer Patients

The advantages of PICC tube for cancer patients include simple operation, less trauma to patients, long-term use, reduction of chemotherapeutic drug damage to blood vessels, reduction of drug extravasation and alleviation of patient’s pain, etc., while the disadvantages include the occurrence of infections, thrombosis and phlebitis in the tube. The main purpose of placing PICC tubes in deep veins of cancer patients is for long-term infusion of fluids, especially for long-term repeated infusion of chemotherapeutic drugs. The advantages of the placement include that the operation is relatively simple, the trauma caused to the patient is small, and the PICC tube can be used for about one year. In addition, the infusion of chemotherapy drugs through the PICC tube greatly reduces the damage of the drugs to the blood vessel wall and the risk of extravasation of the chemotherapy drugs, thus reducing the pain and other symptoms caused by skin damage around the blood vessels due to extravasation of the drugs. The disadvantages of PICC tube insertion are that the infection around the tube may cause fever, or intravascular thrombosis leading to limb edema, and phlebitis and other complications may occur after the tube is inserted, regardless of the patient.
