The shape of what comes out will vary somewhat because of the time of menopause. Women who have had a medical abortion alone have had a short menopause, so the effluent will be seen as a distinctly villi-like gestational sac. In women who have been menopausal for more than three months, the fetus will be visibly formed and even the fetal genitalia will be visible after taking misoprostol because the fetus is already formed at that time. Rarely, after a medication abortion, there is no discharge of the fetal sac.
