How to retain urine for 24-hour urine protein quantification

The 24-hour urine protein quantification is retained in the following manner: 1. Two precise time points must be selected, for example, the patient should go to urinate once at six o’clock in the morning on Monday, regardless of whether the patient feels like urinating or not. This time the urine is discarded, because it is the previous 24 hours of urine volume. After this time, until Tuesday morning at six o’clock, every urine discharge should be left by the patient. A plastic bucket can be prepared beforehand, and all urine discharge should be collected by the patient in this bucket. Have the patient prepare a graduated measuring cup, usually 500mL or 1000mL, and pour all of the patient’s urine for 24 hours into this measuring cup to measure the total amount of mL and record it accurately. 2. Have the patient mix all of the urine well, because urine containing protein may settle to the bottom, so use a stirring bar to mix the protein from the bottom to the top. Stir well and take a part of 10mL~20mL of urine sample from the middle of the container. This way, the urine sample is sent to the laboratory with a uniform protein concentration, and the total number of milliliters is recorded accurately on the test sheet. The result of the laboratory measurement is the protein concentration, which is then multiplied by the total number of milliliters, resulting in a more accurate 24-hour protein urine quantification.
