Platelet donation is a type of blood donation and it is also called component donation. In general, blood donation is only the extraction of blood, which contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, etc. It is called whole blood donation. The platelets are extracted by centrifugation and separation of the platelets through some machines, and then the remaining components are transfused back into the body. There are two types of platelet donation, generally machine collected platelets and the other one is hand collected platelets. In the case of hand-collected platelets, it takes 5-6 copies to collect one unit of platelets.
