If a patient has underlying cerebrovascular disease, it is recommended to consult a neurologist, who will give the patient the appropriate cerebrovascular examination according to the patient’s underlying disease and past history. The initial cerebrovascular examination can be done with intracranial segmental vascular ultrasound, along with cervical vascular ultrasound, to make a preliminary assessment of cerebrovascular atherosclerosis, and to check for cerebrovascular malformations and arteriovenous fistulas. If the patient is suspected of having vascular malformation or aneurysm, CTA or MRA is recommended. If necessary, DSA is the more authoritative test to examine the blood vessels in the head, and if necessary, the patient is given stenting and other treatments under DSA.
