What does intestinal echogenicity mean?

Bowel echoes are a common expression used in ultrasound and other imaging tests, mainly referring to the reflective signals produced when ultrasound encounters obstacles during its propagation through the bowel. Physicians can determine whether there is a lesion in the bowel based on the condition of the bowel echoes. There are many reasons for abnormal intestinal echo, such as thickening of the intestinal wall, accumulation of gas, accumulation of stool, fetal chromosomal abnormalities and so on. 1. Thickening of intestinal wall: If the intestinal wall is thickened due to inflammation, infection or tumor, ultrasound examination will easily show enhanced intestinal echogenicity, and then further examination can be carried out, such as routine blood test, tumor marker test or CT scan of the abdomen to assist in the diagnosis. 2. Accumulation of gas and stool: If there is accumulation of gas and stool in the intestines, ultrasonography is likely to show intestinal echogenicity enhancement, and the cause of accumulation of gas and stool can be clarified through auxiliary examination, and timely treatment can be carried out. 3. Fetal chromosomal abnormality: For pregnant women, if the ultrasound examination finds that the intestinal echogenicity is enhanced, it may suggest that there are chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, and chromosomal examination can be carried out through amniocentesis and other means. If abnormal intestinal echogenicity is found during the examination, the examination should be completed in time to clarify the cause of the abnormal intestinal echogenicity, and the treatment should be carried out as soon as possible to avoid delaying the condition.
