How long does it take to heal from a patella fracture

Healing of a patella fracture usually takes 3 months. The exact time for complete healing varies from patient to patient and from fracture to fracture and may take 6 months or more.
Patellar fracture is caused by direct or indirect violent pulling on the patella, and is mainly characterized by swelling, pain and difficulty in movement of the knee joint.
In the acute stage of patellar fracture, knee activities should be restricted, the knee joint should be kept in the straight position, and the brace should be immobilized for 4~6 weeks. After that, under the guidance of the doctor, the quadriceps muscle isometric contraction exercises can be used to increase the quadriceps muscle strength. 6 weeks later, active knee flexion and extension activity training can be started.
If the fracture is treated surgically, isometric quadriceps contraction exercises can be started after surgery. Usually, the fracture has healed after 3 months, and daily activities can be resumed gradually after continuing the rehabilitation training in the 4th~6th month.
During the recovery process of patellar fracture patients need to try to avoid exercises that aggravate the load on the knee joint, such as hiking, jumping rope and so on. Maintaining a good lifestyle and functional exercises can help in the prevention and treatment of patella fracture. It is recommended that patients choose the appropriate way of treatment and rehabilitation under the guidance of the doctor.
