Can an esophageal CT detect esophageal cancer?

The detection rate of CT for esophageal cancer is relatively low, but it is recommended for patients with esophageal cancer to have CT examination of esophagus, because CT examination of esophagus can understand the invasion of tumor and determine whether there are metastatic lesions. For patients suspected to have esophageal cancer, the main examinations are barium meal X-ray and endoscopy. Early barium meal examination can reveal the changes of esophageal mucosal folds and whether there is filling or defect. Endoscopy can reveal mucosal destruction, ulceration and the presence of neoplastic organisms in the esophagus, and endoscopy can also take the lesion tissue for histological examination to assist in diagnosis.
