Is rhinoscopy painful?

Rhinoscopy is not painful and may involve discomfort such as nasal soreness and mild pain. There are two types of rhinoscopy: anterior rhinoscopy and endonasal rhinoscopy. Anterior rhinoscopy is an examination of the front part of the patient’s nasal cavity, where the doctor props the nostrils up and down by using a stainless steel two-blade-like tool that does not produce a painful sensation. Nasal endoscopy is a hard endoscope. Nasal endoscopy is connected to a light source and enters from the anterior nostril to observe the nasal vestibule, nasal septum, inferior turbinate, middle turbinate, inferior nasal passages, middle nasal passages, olfactory fissure area, and other structures of the nasopharynx. Since the nasal cavity is sensitive to various kinds of stimuli, there may be slight discomfort during the examination, such as itchiness, soreness and slight pain inside the nose. Before performing nasal endoscopy, surface anesthetics such as 1% bupivacaine or 2% dicaine can be sprayed into the nasal cavity for anesthesia to relieve the pain. Patients are advised to go to regular hospitals and do rhinoscopy under the guidance of professional doctors.
