How spinal cord injuries are functionally rated

A unified standard for spinal cord injury functional assessment is important for proper communication between clinical and research personnel. 1984 was the first time that the American Board of Spinal Injuries (ASIA) established a standard for spinal cord injury neurological function classification, which has been revised several times in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2006. In 2006, the American Spinal Injury Council and a dozen other related committees revised the criteria again. At present, the standard has been widely used in the international arena.
