Is AIHA curable?

AIHA is an autoimmune disease that produces antibodies against its own red blood cells. Treating the primary disease and interrupting the production of abnormal antibodies is necessary to effectively control the disease. In patients with an acute onset of the disease, such as AIHA induced by infection, aggressive control of the infection can effectively control the further development of AIHA with a fair prognosis, but when treatment is not effective, the disease may become chronic and lingering with a poor prognosis. Less than 1/3 of patients can be taken off medication without continuing haemolysis.
