Acupuncture points to prevent epilepsy

Acupuncture and stimulation of acupuncture points does not completely prevent epilepsy, but only improves epilepsy symptoms and reduces the number of seizures. Relief of epilepsy depends on different types of evidence and different periods of the disease, and different acupoints are taken. During the seizure stage, acupuncture points such as Shuigou, Baihui, Houxi, Yongquan and Neiguan can be used to dispel phlegm and open the orifices (to clear the orifices by removing phlegm and clearing the mind), and to quench wind and stop epilepsy; and during the remission stage of the disease, acupuncture points such as Yindang, Haowei, Maijiao, Taichong and Fenglong can be used to reduce the number of seizures. During the remission period, other acupoints can be added according to different types of symptoms, such as Neiguan and Hegu for those with exuberant phlegm-fire; Fengchi and Taichong for those with wind-phlegm obstruction; Xinyu, Spleen Yu, and Shusanli for those with heart-spleen deficiency; and Neiguan and Diaphragm Yu for those with stasis of blood obstructing the orifices. Patients with epilepsy are advised to consult a neurologist for treatment.
