Sudden double vision in the eyes of an elderly person that improves after a few minutes should alert you to the possibility of cerebrovascular disease. The elderly tend to have problems with the “three highs” and are prone to transient cerebral ischaemia and cerebral infarction. If a small cerebrovascular lesion affects the nerves and muscles in the eye, the sudden onset of double vision can be ruled out by an ophthalmologic examination followed by a cranial CT scan.
