Nifedipine can treat hypertension in pregnancy and is taken as an antihypertensive drug during pregnancy, not as a birth control drug. Generally during pregnancy, if a pregnant woman develops mild hypertension, she can be observed without antihypertensive medication if her blood pressure is below 150 mmHg. If a pregnant woman’s systolic blood pressure exceeds 150mmHg and diastolic blood pressure exceeds 100mmHg, she should consider taking antihypertensive drugs. The common antihypertensive drugs for pregnant women are labetalol, methyldopa and nifedipine. The decision of which drug to use depends on the opinion of the cardiologist and obstetrician.
