Protrusion is a common complication of hyperthyroidism, but many patients do not know much about the relationship between the two. Is proptosis caused by hyperthyroidism? Are there other causes of proptosis? Causes of different types of proptosis 1. Endocrine proptosis This is the most common cause of proptosis, and can be divided into thyrotropic proptosis and thyrotropic proptosis. The former is caused by hyperthyroidism, while the latter is a significant protrusion of the eye due to excessive secretion of thyrotropin by the pituitary gland. 2.Intermittent protrusion of the eyeball This kind of protrusion of the eyeball when the head is lowered and the breath is held with force, or when the jugular vein of the eye is pressed, is mostly seen in patients with orbital varices, and when the head is raised or the breath is released, the eyeball is reset again. 3, inflammatory eye protrusion One is caused by acute inflammation of the orbit, such as orbital fasciitis, orbital cellulitis, cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis, etc.; the other is caused by chronic inflammation of the orbit, such as infiltration of inflammatory cells, proliferation of fibrous tissue, etc. The clinical manifestations are similar to tumors, so it is called pseudotumor. 4.Pulsating orbital protrusion is caused by rupture of internal carotid artery and communication with cavernous sinus, commonly caused by traumatic skull base fracture, carotid atherosclerosis, aneurysm, etc. 5.Orbital tumor protrusion is caused by the tumor growing in the orbit and occupying the position of the orbit and pushing the eye forward. Most of the orbital tumors originate in the orbit, and a few of them spread from the nearby paranasal sinuses, and very rarely from the systemic metastasis. 6.Traumatic orbital protrusion is common after trauma, such as intraorbital hemorrhage or orbital emphysema.
