Does hand, foot and mouth disease cause fever?

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute infectious disease caused by enteroviruses that may cause fever. Most of them occur in preschool children, with a particularly high incidence in kindergarten children. Both the patient and the latently infected person are sources of infection, and transmission occurs mainly through the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, and close contact. HFMD can occur throughout the year, but is more common in summer and fall. Children may develop fever and rashes on the hands, feet, mouth, and buttocks, and in a few cases meningitis and encephalitis may occur. HFMD is caused by enterovirus infections and usually has a good prognosis and low mortality rate.
