Normal range of liver size

In normal adults, the liver is not palpable under the costal margins, and the left-right, upper-upper, and anterior-posterior diameters of the liver are about 25 cm, 15 cm, and 5 cm, respectively. In normal adults, the liver cannot be touched under the rib cage, but for people with a floppy abdominal wall and a long, thin body, the lower edge of the liver is palpable under the costal arch and the xiphoid process during deep inhalation, but it is within 1cm and 3cm, respectively. For those with a sharp supra-abdominal angle, the liver can be reached up to 5 cm below the base of the xiphoid process. The left-right, upper-upper, and anterior-posterior diameters of the liver are about 25 cm, 15 cm, and 5 cm, respectively. If the above criteria are exceeded, the liver is subluxated or enlarged. The upper border of the liver can be detected by percussion. If the upper hepatic border is decreased and the upper and lower hepatic diameters are normal, this represents a subluxation of the liver. If the upper hepatic border is normal or elevated, the liver is enlarged.
