Physiology and pathology of the Governor’s Vessel (serial 2)

There are fourteen meridians in the human body, of which the Ren and Du meridians are in the central axis of the body and are the most important transportation lifelines of the organism. The Governor meridian is in the center of the back of the body and the Ren meridian is in the center of the front of the body. The two meridians are connected at the beginning and the end, and the Governor meridian is responsible for Yang energy, while the Ren meridian is responsible for Yin energy. All Yang meridians in the body gather in the Governor’s Vessel and all Yin meridians converge in the Ren Vessel. Therefore, the Ren and Du Vessels are the general outline of the other 12 meridians. Wu Jun of the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Nantong City Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine The Governor’s Vessel oversees the Yang meridians of the whole body and is known as the “Sea of Yang Meridians”. The Yang meridians of the human body are all located on the outer side of the body and are responsible for the movement and protection of the body. If the meridian does not work, the yang energy cannot gather and circulate, and the disease resistance and protection function will be weak. If the Governor Vessel is inoperative, the functions of the five internal organs and the six internal organs will decline, and the body will not be able to generate enough qi and blood, and the overall function of life will be low. The Governor Vessel is on the dorsal side of the body and has more chances of being damaged by external evil than the Ren Vessel on the ventral side. People spend a lot of time in a supine sleeping posture, and the Governor’s Vessel is compressed for a long time; the natural aging pattern of human tissues; or due to illnesses and other reasons, the Governor’s Vessel gradually becomes occluded; the situation of the Governor’s Vessel being incompetent and not smooth is very common in the population, especially after people reach middle age. If the blockage of the Directing Vessel is on the upper side, it is either manifested as frequent headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and weakness; or it is manifested as a decline in cardiopulmonary function, frequent chest tightness, palpitations and shortness of breath, chronic cough and asthma; or it is manifested as pain in the back of the shoulder and fear of cold; or it is manifested as pain in the shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers and other parts of the body with difficulty moving. If the node is incompetent in the middle, the lower back and upper lumbar section will have heavy soreness and numbness; or chronic diseases of the digestive system such as liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach and pancreas. If the blockage of the Directing Vessel is in the lower part of the body, there will be pain and numbness in the waist, hips, knees, legs, heels and toes; or chronic diseases of the genitourinary system. Regardless of the location of the incompetent Governor Vessel, “if it does not pass, it hurts”, and there will generally be varying degrees of pressure pain on its body surface circulation. Not only does the incompetence of the Directing Vessel cause many diseases, it is also an important cause of accelerated aging of the body. When sick, most people only focus on the treatment of the disease itself, ignoring the deep-seated cause of the blockage of the Governor’s Vessel, and because the causative factors are not eliminated, the long-term effect is certainly not ideal. Since ancient times, it has been said that “if the Governor is open, all diseases will not be born”. In my clinical treatment work, I pay great attention to the diagnosis and treatment of the blockage of the Governor’s Vessel, so that many seemingly difficult to treat the disease has achieved more desirable results. Here are some representative cases as follows.
