Ornidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole class of antimicrobials, with potent antimicrobial activity against anaerobic bacteria, as well as potent antiprotozoal action against protozoa including Trichomonas, amoebas and Giardia lamblia. It can be used for anaerobic infections, vaginal trichomoniasis, amoebic dysentery, amoebic liver abscesses, sepsis and severe systemic infections. Adverse reactions are most common in the gastrointestinal tract and are manifested by nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal discomfort and diarrhea; metallic taste in the mouth; headache; and dark urine. Occasionally: peripheral neuralgia, insomnia, stomatitis. Rarely: epilepsy. Note history of brain or spinal cord lesions, epilepsy is contraindicated. Use with caution in patients with active central nervous system disease. Patients should use under the guidance of a medical professional and strictly follow medical advice.
