Emergency eye care is available. Most general hospitals have an emergency ophthalmology clinic where sudden eye conditions can be treated promptly. Some hospitals may not have an emergency ophthalmology clinic, but when you have an eye problem, someone will contact an ophthalmologist on the inpatient unit for a consultation so that you can get the appropriate treatment. Sudden eye conditions that require timely checkups, such as sudden vision loss, sudden eye swelling, eye pain, blurred vision, and eye trauma, foreign objects in the eye, or chemical burns in the eye, require timely medical attention and treatment in the emergency room, while some common illnesses can be treated in the general outpatient clinic.
